Overview
The School of Banking and Finance (SBF) is one of the leading schools in
China, and enjoys a very high international reputation. It has particular
strengths in the fields of money and banking, financial economics, international
finance, and financial engineering. The school not only includes a highly
specialized faculty with both expertise and a passion for teaching, but also
maintains a global perspective in its course offerings, added to which, close
relationships with China’s financial industry.
Currently, SBF has over 58 teachers, with 49 of them being faculty members,
4 of whom experts in their fields and who enjoy a government special allowance.
Professors and associate professors account for approximately 62% of the
whole faculty, with more than 55% having doctoral degrees. A number of SBF's
senior professors are experts in their field of study, and a large number
of associate and assistant professors with up-to-date knowledge, skills,
and foreign educational backgrounds. SBF has also invited a group of famous
experts in both financial academics and industry, such as Ronald McKinnon,
Liu Hongru and Li Yang, as visiting professors.
At present, about 1500 students are studying at SBF, among which 1000 are
undergraduates, 200 graduates, and 50 doctoral graduates. There are 100 international
students pursuing either bachelor or master degrees at SBF. The school also
has roughly 300 part-time graduate students who major in finance.
The mission of SBF is to be a world-class school of banking and finance;
contributing academic knowledge that can fuel the revival of the Chinese
economy, and to cultivate business leaders for China and the world. SBF offers
the undergraduate, graduate and part-time graduate students the best education
opportunities; providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to
succeed both in their lives and in their professions; helping them obtain
the global vision and the ability to solve problems in the real business
world and to make innovations. |

Departments and Research Institutes
The school is composed of three academic departments -- the department of
finance, the department of financial engineering, and the department of investments.
It also has built up academic research platforms such as Research Center
of Financial Research, Research Center of Finance R&D, Research Center
of Financial Product and Investment, and M&A Research Center. Meanwhile,
the school has its own School Office, Teaching Management Office, Instructor’s
Office, Reference Room, Computer Room and Financial Project Laboratory, etc. |

Undergraduate Programs
The undergraduate programs of SBF are the most competitive undergraduate
programs in China. A full-time undergraduate program lasts for four
academic years. The main purpose of the program is to cultivate the
students as applied finance talents with strong innovation ability, positive
life attitude and broad international vision. It will build on the foundation
with economics and finance theoretical basis, which will ensure those good
performances in financial market with strong cross-cultural communication
ability and various aspects solid knowledge in finance, management and so
on.

Master Programs
SBF offers Two-year, full-time Master of Economics programs in nine disciplines: Monetary
Theory and Policy, International Finance, Bank Management, capital
market, Corporate Finance, Financial Risk Management, Financial Engineering
and Investments. This Master's program is to equip students with more advanced,
interdisciplinary, yet practice-oriented, financial knowledge and problem-solving
techniques, for both academic and financial industry positions. At the
end of this program, the students will have a good appreciation of applied
finance with solid advanced economics and finance theory, strong cross-cultural
communication ability and proficiency in Chinese economics and finance.

PHD Programs
The Ph.D. program is to offer an advanced and highly specialized course
of Finance study. In the course of pursuing Ph.D. studies, students actively
participate in seminars and workshops and use them to help develop their
dissertation, present their research for critical feedback, and refine their
analysis of the dissertation. Four fields of specialization are offered in
the Ph.D. program in Finance: monetary economics, financial economics, financial
intermediary, and financial engineering.

International Students
In order to diversify its student body and encourage a global vision among
students to a greater extent, the school has begun recruiting international
students since 2005. Currently, the school offers Bachelor, Master and Doctor
degrees in economics, all the degree programs are offered only in Chinese.
1. Undergraduate Programs
This program has expertise in two research areas: International Finance and
Portfolio Investment. The students in both areas will be trained into applied
talents mainly for the multinational banks, the transnational investment
banks, the fund organizations, the insurance companies, the financial sector
in large industrial companies, the finance consultancy firms as well as
relevant management departments. Most graduates find positions in planning
and management of investment or financing as a trader in foreign exchange
and capital markets, corporation securities business, corporate financing
and so on.

The students will be trained into advanced applied talents and reach higher
management level mainly in the central banks, the multinational banks,
the transnational investment banks, the fund organizations, the insurance
companies, the financial sector in large industrial companies, the finance

decision on investment or financing, mastery the international financial

3. Ph.D. Programs
Students should expect to study for about four or five years to complete
a Ph.D. in Finance. The graduates of the program should achieve the level
of advanced knowledge in their specialty necessary to carry out original
academic research, along with sufficient knowledge of other disciplines
to facilitate inter-disciplinary insight; to demonstrate this research
ability by producing a high-quality dissertation and academic papers; to
be critical thinkers; to have well-developed ethical reasoning skills;
to have a good understanding of the international business environment;
and to have good preparation for a career as an effective teacher.

Academic Research
SBF puts its research focus on important theoretic and practical problems
in economics and finance. It has completed many research projects on national
and provincial level, such as National Social Science and Science Fund Project,
Ministry of Education Research Project, etc. In addition, the school has
also undertaken many research projects with several international financial
organizations, domestic banks and non-bank financial institutions. The research
achievements have made a significant impact on Chinese financial area in
terms of theory, reform and development.

Cooperation and Exchange
SBF has put a lot of weights on its international exchange programs. The
school actively communicates and cooperates with international and other
domestic universities, as well as with relevant research institutes. SBF
has initiated various activities such as academic exchanges, teacher assignment

as The University of Birmingham, The University of Manchester, University
of Victoria, Dalhousie
University, Seton Hall University, Anglia Ruskin University from many
countries or regions over the world. These activities have dramatically promoted
