Employment Prospects
-
As evidenced by statistics from recent years, all SFS graduates are employed
upon graduation. Supply from some of the disciplines cannot even beat
the market demand for graduates of our background. Nearly half of the
students who came from beyond Beijing are recruited into satisfactory
employment in the capital, which is generally considered a parameter
of the success of an educational program.
The secrets for this success are attributable to the design of our courses,
to the combination of business with foreign languages, or the double up
of a Band 6 certificate, of the College English Test (CET-6) in addition
to a first foreign language such as Japanese or Arabic.
Major employers of SFS graduates include government departments and or
ministries, giant companies, and universities. Some of our graduates choose
to continue their education in other countries where their acquired foreign
language is spoken.

Undergraduate Programs
The School of Foreign Studies accepts applications for placements
in eight undergraduate programs – Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean,
Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese, with the total enrolment now standing
at about 450 students.
What characterizes SFS and its programs is a combination of foreign languages
with international business discipline. The mission statement is to produce
professionals highly qualified in foreign trade with both a global perspective
and a strong edge in one of the foreign languages offered.
Target employers of our students are often colleges and universities, research
institutions, government departments, international branches of State-owned
companies, joint ventures, wholly-owned foreign businesses operating in
China.
Courses open to SFS undergraduates can be classified into
two groups: foundational and advanced. Foundational courses include reading,
listening comprehension, speaking, grammar, and many other compulsory and
optional courses in each of the foreign languages listed above.
Advanced courses for the third and fourth year students are further divided
into two groups: trade and business courses, and language and literature
courses. The business sector offers courses such as writing in corporate
communication, reading in selected journals published in the west, interpreting
and translating, and negotiation skills. And the language and literature
component includes intensive reading, country briefs on cultural background
information to the countries where the languages are spoken, literary criticism,
poetry, literature reading, translation, newspaper reading, and second
foreign languages.
Electives to non-SFS majors
The School offers such courses as “World Culture”, “World Literature”,
“World Economics”, and “Critical Global Issues” to all undergraduates
of the university. These are all the latest updates with extensive coverage,
enabling students to broaden their horizon and enrich their general knowledge
of the world beyond.

Cooperation and Exchange
The growing cooperation and exchange programs over the recent
years have further highlighted the special features of UIBE designed and
devoted to producing graduates with global dimensions. The University now
maintains exchange relations with more than 60 universities and other institutions
of higher learning in over 20 countries and regions. About 20 of these
institutions have regular relations and programs with the School of Foreign
Studies.
SFS faculty members are frequent visiting lecturers and conference participants
to overseas destinations. Half of the teaching faculty members of the School
have been staff members to Chinese embassies in other countries and or
other missions overseas. About 80 per cent of the faculty has had training
and studying experience of living abroad. And at the moment about one fifth
of the staff on roll are either students or course takers abroad.
Thanks to the assistance of the national education fund and other exchange
programs, scores of undergraduates and or post-graduates are dispatched
every year on overseas student missions and tours.
