Introduction of the Dean

School of Finance and Banking

The School of Finance and Banking (SFB) of UIBE is a newly founded school based on the Department of Finance, Department of Business Management, and Department of International Economy from the former China Institutes of Finance and Banking after its merger with UIBE in June 2000.

 

The Latest Developments

SFB embraces global orientation, distinctive characteristics, training elite and servicing society as its program guidance. The objective is to meet the market economy's needs for financial managers in the process of financial globalization and high-tech development, and train talents with comprehensive and practical capability required by the banking industry, which is transforming itself toward internationalization and universal banking, and the modern enterprises, which are becoming more and more globalized. Through effective measures of reform and by incorporating selective and adjustable specialty system under clear aims, its programs have strengthened the capacity of adapting to the changing environment.

SFB has a group of well-qualified academic faculty members with a balanced structure of specialties. It has many senior professors who are renowned both at home and abroad. All the young professors hold high level, high quality degrees. SFB also invites experts with doctoral advising qualifications from the banking industry as guest professors. Through years of efforts on subject development, SFB has not only enhanced its practicality and theoretical standing, but also put emphasis on application of modern techniques of quantitative financial analysis. At SFB, the specialties and teaching and academic research fields are consistent with the international practices and are suitable for China's financial reform and development. Compared with its counterparts in China, SFB is distinctive with its own characteristics and has obvious advantages in the academic fields.

 

Teaching and Academic Programs

1. Department of Monetary Economics

This department is responsible for organizing teaching and research activities for undergraduate and graduate studies and subject development in the area of monetary economics. It manages and develops relevant courses involving macro and micro economic theories, monetary theories and policies, international financial theories and policies, fiscal theory and financial history and so on. All courses take management technique analysis in macro finance aspect and normative theory research as their core and theoretical economics as their foundation.

2. Department of Corporate Finance and Investment Banking

This department is responsible for organizing teaching and research activities for undergraduate and graduate studies and subject development in the area of financial economics. It manages and develops relevant courses involving in financial economics, investment, investment banking business, corporate financial management and analysis, capital market analysis and operation and so on. All of these courses take direct financing theories and practice in micro finance aspect as their core and management as their foundation.

3. Department of Financial Intermediaries and Bank Management

This department is responsible for organizing teaching and research activities for undergraduate and graduate studies and subject development in the area of financial intermediaries of finance. It manages and develops relevant courses in the theory of financial intermediaries, banking and non-banking financial institutions, marketing policies and measures of financial institutions, financial risk management, financial regulations and financial supervision and so on. All of these courses take indirect financing theories and practice in micro finance aspect as their core and application economics as their foundation.

4. Department of Mathematical Finance and Financial Engineering

This department is responsible for organizing teaching and academic work for undergraduate and graduate studies and subject development in the area of financial engineering. It manages and develops courses involving in financial engineering, mathematical finance and financial metrological analysis approaches, derivatives, development and design of financial products, pricing of financial products and so on. All of these courses take modern financial theories and technologies which are integrated with e-commerce, information system and engineering as their core and applied mathematics and system engineering theory as their foundation.

5. Institute of Financial Research

This institute is responsible for coordinating, organizing and directing research work within SFB. Their major responsibilities include: Organizing the application of research projects, and managing and supervising the operation of these projects; organizing, coordinating and managing activities based on financial forums; providing research information, organizing and supporting academic activities of each department; organizing professors to take part in high-level, international academic activities in economic and financial fields.

 

Subject Development

For undergraduate level, SFB is now offering degrees in two majors, i.e., Finance and Financial Engineering; for graduate and doctorial level, SFB is now offering degrees in one major, i.e., Finance.

Undergraduate courses in finance and financial engineering give priority to quality education. Graduate courses in finance give priority to specialty education, with an aim to train high-level managerial personnel in specialty applications within the finance major. There are three concentrations, i.e., monetary economics, financial economics, and financial intermediaries. Doctoral level courses give priority to theories and high level methodology, with an aim to train talents with excellent analytical, research and decision-making capabilities.

¡öMonetary Economics

Monetary Economics focus on financial macro area and normative theory research, including money demand, supply and monetary equilibrium, inflation, deflation and financial crisis, international capital flow, finance macro-adjust and control theory and monetary policy operation, financial supervision and laws and regulations, international financial system arrangement and policy coordination. The major research areas are: monetary theories and policies, international finance, financial laws and regulations and financial supervision and so on. Its objective is to provide the students with capability and skills of engaging in theory and policy research, provide talents for policy operation sector of central bank, financial supervision sector and financial research institutions.

¡öFinancial Economics

Financial Economics stresses on financial micro field, and gives introduction to micro finance content in the field of direct finance. Its objective is to provide the students with capability and skills of engaging in capital market operation and investment bank operation and management. It takes capital market, corporate finance and personal finance as its core, and studies trading skills in the financial market, especially capital market, with courses including investment, financial engineering and behavior finance. Mathematical finance is also included in this subject. The major research fields include: investment banking business, corporate financial management and analysis, capital market analysis and operation and so on. Its objective is to train high level managerial personnel related to direct finance, especially capital market transaction.

¡öFinancial Intermediaries

Financial Intermediaries focuses on the financial intermediary's aspect in the field of indirect finance. Its objective is to provide the students with capability and skills of engaging in bank and other financial institution operation and management. The major content is concerning operation and management of financial institution, including financial intermediary's theory, bank and non-bank financial institution business and operation, marketing policies and measures of financial institutions, operation model of financial institutions and financial risk. In addition, foreign exchange transaction and management, international credit and international settlement as well as transnational bank management are also included in this area. The major research sub-fields are: financial risk and risk management, bank marketing, commercial bank operation and management, transnational bank management, credit analysis and evaluation and so on. Its objective is to train high-level managerial personnel for local commercial banks, business sector of transnational commercial banks and other financial institutions.

¡öFinancial Engineering

This program emphasizes the practical operation and theoretical research of financial engineering, mainly including: mathematical financial research; financial asset and financial product pricing research; design, development and application research of new financial products; research on implementing technical combination and decomposition by using existing financial tools to innovate financial implement scheme for company; research on design, development, combination, innovation and implementation of new financial tools and transaction measures; creativity and individual financial problem solution research; financial risk management research of transnational companies and financial institutions. The major research sub-fields are: foundations of financial engineering theories (mainly including mathematical financial methods, model establishment and modern micro financial theory); financial risk measure and management, development and design of financial products. Its objective is to train high-level technical personnel in financial engineering with various knowledge such as economy, finance, management, law, mathematical metrology, system engineering and modern information technologies.

Introduction of the Dean

Professor Wu Jun, Ph.D. in economics, is now the Dean of School of Finance and Banking of UIBE, and Vice President of the Beijing Financial Association. He enjoys qualification of doctorial panelist and government special allowance for national specialists who have made special contribution to China's development. Engaging in teaching and research work in monetary and financial theories and policies for a long time, he possesses a high academic level, sound theoretical foundation and stronger capability in academic organization and coordination. He delivers in undergraduate and graduate lectures in: money and banking, monetary economics, central banking, modern monetary theory and policy, financial innovation and so on. Academic research fields include monetary theory and policy, financial system reform, financial risk and protection, financial supervision, inflation and deflation, foreign exchange reserve management.

Professor Wu has presided many research projects at the ministerial and bank levels, including key projects of People's Bank of China: ModerateTightening of Monetary Policy Operation and Implementation in a r Market Economy, and Fiscal Policy and Monetary Policy Harmonization and Coordination. He has also published 3 monographs, edited 6 textbooks, issued more than 70 treatises pertaining to monetary theory and monetary policy, financial system reform, financial risk and protection, financial supervision, inflation theory, deflation problem, foreign exchange reserve management in famous academic journals such as Economics Trends, Financial Research and so on.
