School of Foreign Studies

A Brief

The School of Foreign Studies (SFS) operates eight departments that include Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Russian, and Vietnamese. And there is the Sino-Italian Language Training Centre. By late 2003 there were about 450 undergraduates and more than 70 post graduates.

SFS boasts a highly qualified faculty competitive on both lecturing and doing research. Out of a 60-member total, there are 12 full professors and 26 associate professors, 28 of whom serve meanwhile as supervisors to graduate students. Also in this team there are 11 who have earned or will have a Ph. D. degree to their credit. In addition, some foreign teachers are employed to supplement.

The eight departments of the School are all members and /or standing members of their separate National Teaching Associations and Literature Societies. And some of the School professors are conveners and/or coordinators at these organizations.

Over the past five decades, the School has maintained regular exchange relations with over 20 colleges, universities, and other institutions of other countries and regions. SFS faculty members are frequent visiting lecturers and conference participants to overseas destinations. About 80 per cent of the faculty has had training and studying experience of living abroad. And thanks to the assistance of the national education fund and other exchange programs, scores of undergraduates and /or post-grads are dispatched every year on overseas student missions and tours.

Undergraduates Programs and Courses

The School of Foreign Studies accepts applications for placements in eight undergraduate programs - Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese, with the total enrolment now standing at about 450 students.

What characterizes SFS and its programs is a combination of foreign languages with international business discipline. The mission statement is to produce professionals highly qualified in foreign trade with both a global perspective and a strong edge in one of the foreign languages offered.

Target employers of our students are often colleges and universities, research institutions, government departments, international branches of State-owned companies, joint ventures, wholly-owned foreign businesses operating in China.

Courses open to SFS undergraduates can be classified into two groups: foundational and advanced. Foundational courses include reading, listening comprehension, speaking, grammar, and many other compulsory and optional courses in each of the foreign languages listed above.

Advanced courses for the third and fourth year students are further divided into two groups: trade and business courses, and language and literature courses. The business sector offers courses such as writing in corporate communication, reading in selected journals published in the west, interpreting and translating, and negotiation skills. And the language and literature component includes intensive reading, country briefs on cultural background information to the countries where the languages are spoken, literary criticism, poetry, literature reading, translation, newspaper reading, and second foreign languages.

Electives to non-SFS majors:
The School offers such courses as "World Culture", "World Literature", "World Economics", and "Critical Global Issues" to all undergraduates of the university. These are all the latest updates with extensive coverage, enabling students to broaden their horizon and enrich their general knowledge of the world beyond.

Post-graduate Programs and Courses

More than 70 post graduates are now enrolled at the SFS, reading for MA degrees in Japanese, Arabic, and Applied Linguistics of other Foreign Languages. Their majors range from foreign languages, literatures, and translation, to country studies and business communication. Beginning in 2004, the School accepts applicants for its "Global Business" Program leading on to a Master degree.

In line with the long-term objectives of the University, post-graduate education will represent one of the core developments for the School, which therefore expects a substantial growth in this sector in the years to come.

Employment Prospects

As evidenced by statistics from recent years, all SFS graduates are employed upon graduation. Supply from some of the disciplines cannot even beat the market demand for graduates of our background. Nearly half of the students who came from beyond Beijing are recruited into satisfactory employment in the capital, which is generally considered a parameter of the success of an educational program.

The secrets for this success are attributable to the design of our courses, to the combination of business with foreign languages, or the double up of a Band 6 certificate, of the College English Test (CET-6) in addition to a first foreign language such as Japanese or Arabic.

Major employers of SFS graduates include government departments and or ministries, giant companies, and universities. Some of our graduates choose to continue their education in other countries where their acquired foreign language is spoken.

Foreign Exchange Programs

The growing cooperation and exchange programs over the recent years have further highlighted the special features of UIBE designed and devoted to producing graduates with global dimensions. The University now maintains exchange relations with more than 60 universities and other institutions of higher learning in over 20 countries and regions. About 20 of these institutions have regular relations and programs with the School of Foreign Studies.

SFS faculty members are frequent visiting lecturers and conference participants to overseas destinations. Half of the teaching faculty members of the School have been staff members to Chinese embassies in other countries and or other missions overseas. About 80 per cent of the faculty has had training and studying experience of living abroad. And at the moment about one fifth of the staff on roll are either students or course takers abroad.

Thanks to the assistance of the national education fund and other exchange programs, scores of undergraduates and or post-graduates are dispatched every year on overseas student's missions and tours.

Languages Training Programs

The major portfolio of the Center is to provide training in the Italian language to Chinese candidates chosen for Sino-Italian cooperation projects before they leave for Italy where they are trained in their respective industries. In addition, the center also provides similar service to anyone who wants to. Since its establishment the center has trained 920 people for Sino-Italian cooperation projects and 2100 others who have left for employment here in China, using their acquired Italian proficiency.

The School of Foreign Studies (SFS) recommends and selects excellent students from among those who have taken four-semester courses in the Japanese Program for college education in Japan to be wholly or partially financed by the Japanese side.
