Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

The goal of the PhD program is to prepare students for a career in teaching and research in academic institutions, or for positions of leadership in government and business sectors.

Doctoral study is distinct from lower levels of education. When one enters the PhD program, it signifies that one will work at the frontier of human knowledge in specific areas of study, and one is expected to make original contributions in terms of new methods of investigation and their application. This is not an easy task. Achieving this requires not just motivation, inspiration and capability, but also great personal sacrifice of time, emotion and immediate rewards. However, as the progress of globalization has created unprecedented demand for well-trained PhD graduates, achievement will undoubtedly be worth the sacrifice.

The program consists mainly of core preparation, primary and secondary field requirements, and the writing of a dissertation. The purpose is to develop research capability through strong theoretical grounding, complex analytical techniques and rigorous research training.

Writing a dissertation is the most challenging aspect of the doctoral study and offers the greatest opportunity for originality. Each student is guided in his/her dissertation initially by a principal supervisor, and subsequently by a committee of three experts. Throughout the dissertation, a student is expected to acquire the skills to formulate a research topic, apply knowledge and techniques to the analysis of practical problems, and justify conclusions that advance scholarly understanding of the issues investigated. SITE has clear standards for the quality of a PhD dissertation: It must demonstrate independent thinking and competence in research, and capability for making original contributions to knowledge of genuine significance.

In the course of pursuing PhD studies, students are expected to actively participate in seminars and workshops and use them to help develop their thesis topic, present their research in progress to receive critical feedback, and refine their analysis in the dissertation.

SITE is dedicated to creating an environment in which students can prepare themselves to take leadership roles in applied research related to China's foreign trade and foreign direct investment, finance, and other aspects of the economy.
