School of Law

Legal education has been an integral part of the educational program of UIBE since its earliest days. In 1984, as the university realized how important a role law plays in the field of international trade and economic cooperation, UIBE established its first independent law department named the Department of International Business Law. After 11 years of rapid development, the once small department decided to be reorganized, and so the School of Law was founded in 1995. Though 16 years is not a long history, the School of Law has managed to establish itself as a leading law school in China. It is able to grant law degrees in all bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. By 2003, more than 800 students have graduated and some 300 received their master's or doctoral degree. Today, a faculty of 33 members, including 7 professors and 20 assistant professors, is providing courses to over 180 undergraduates and more than 330 post-graduates from home and abroad. With the increasing demand of society for people in the legal profession, the size of the school is planned to expand in the years to come.

Since its foundation, the School of Law has been dedicated to academic and professional training of future scholars, judges and senior lawyers engaged in the field of international economic cases. To accomplish this goal, the School of Law strives to provide effective and inspiring faculty who can train students in the process of legal analysis as well as in the development of their foreign language proficiency and knowledge regarding international trade. A special teaching method adopted by the law school is 'case study', which resembles the teaching method popular in almost every prominent law school in the United States. The School of Law has been committed to promoting its academic research, recruiting distinguished faculty members and setting proper courses for its outstanding students.

The curriculum usually includes the following courses: International Commercial Law, Corporate and Investment Law, Comparative Contract Law, Law of Sales of Goods, Security Law, etc. Those courses are taught in the form of case study and possess a leading position in domestic legal education.

The School of Law has a priority of cultivating its students' ability to innovate, to practice, and their diligence in their future career. Thus, graduates of the School of Law will find it not difficult to meet the changing needs of the knowledge-based economy in the 21st century.
