The University aims for excellence in research. Through its faculties it seeks to be a major contributor to research and development activities related to social, economic, linguistic and legal issues of relevance to China and the world. In particular the University values research and development as one means of contributing to analysis and resolution of community, business and industrial issues, and of strengthening links between community and higher education.

It also leads to consultancy which is a form of contracted research addressing specific problems identified by a client.
